Former One Direction member Harry Styles has started his debut solo album, which he shares his name with, at No. 1 in the United Kingdom, where the singer has been a star ever since he graduated from The X Factor back in 2010. Harry Styles managed to move about 57,000 copies in its opening frame, which is a sizable beginning across the pond.
To help introduce the public to what Harry Styles sounded like as a solo artist, the British musician released the album’s lead single “Sign Of The Times” just last month. The track was instantly a success, and it debuted at No. 1 in the U.K. in its first week on the chart, kicking Ed Sheeran’s seemingly-unstoppable “Shape Of You” out of the top spot for just one week.
“Sign Of The Times” was Styles’ first solo cut, but it was far from his first hit single. He now has an incredible eight No. 1 hits, with seven of those rocketing to the top during his time with One Direction. Altogether, he can now count 23 top 40 hits in his back catalog, and there are surely more to come now that his record is out. eight of the 10 songs featured on Harry Styles debut somewhere inside the top 100 this week (though none of them hit the top 40 on their first try), while “Sign” remains in the top 10.
The pop-turned-rock singer has now collected his fifth chart-topping album, though of course, this is his first on his own. As a member of One Direction, he and his bandmates sent four of their five full-lengths to the No. 1 position in their home country, with only the first record missing the peak by a single slot. The group also has four American No. 1s on the albums tally, though here in the States, their last title as a full band missed the mark, while their first debuted at No. 1 with ease.
Harry Styles is expected to top the Billboard 200 when that all-encompassing chart is refreshed in a few days as well with an even larger sum.
